How To Get Fit On An In-Ground Trampoline

You’ve heard that exercising on an in-ground trampoline is not only a fun way to get in shape, but it’s a way to get fit and stay healthy without putting any stress or strain on your bones, joints and back. Have you ever wondered, though how to get fit on an in-ground trampoline? It is just as simple as getting on and bouncing? Well, yes… and no.

There are specific routines you can do when you’re on the in-ground trampoline to help amp up the health benefits you’re reaping from your leaping. 

How To Get Fit On An In-Ground Trampoline

Just jump. Yes, you can just jump and reap health benefits. The mere idea of being airborn and not being held hostage to gravity boosts your mood! 

Jumping jacks. Get a cardio boost by doing jumping jacks. You’ll be moving your arms and legs and getting more fit. 

The basic bounce. Hold your hands on your hips or swing them while you jump. Bend your knees slightly. Bounce no more than six inches off the trampoline. Bend your legs when you land. Do this thirty times. 

Leg lifts. You can sit in the middle of the in-ground trampoline, balance on your bent elbows and lift your legs. This is similar to “regular” leg lifts, but reduces the stress on your joints. Lift your legs, contract your abs, hold for 20 seconds, release. Repeat until you can easily do 30 leg lifts. 

Power bounces. A power bounce, with a lateral reach added will work your lower body and will also help strengthen your arms and shoulders. Do do this, sit on the trampoline, quickly stand up and bounce. Reach one arm out across your body, alternate arms every time you bounce. Return to the sitting postiion. Repeat. Work up to 30 bounces. 

In-ground trampoline push ups. Center yourself in the trampoline so you can easily get into a plank position without your toes slipping off. Do push-ups, either full arm or from bent elbow. This is easier on your joints and shoulders because the trampoline has “give” when you are lowering and then raising yourself up. Work up to 30 push ups. 

There are many exercises that can be modified to accommodate your in-ground trampoline and will be easier on your body than those done on the ground.

Fun is fun until someone gets hurt and here are five tips that parents can implement to make certain everyone — not just the children — are safe when rebounding on the in-ground trampoline.

  1. When you get an in-ground trampoline you have already amped up the safety. These aren’t suspended above the ground and therefore are safer, when used correctly. Make certain you invest in the accessories to cover the coils and form a protective barrier.
  2. Buy an in-ground trampoline that has good “shock absorbency.” There are some trampolines with more “give” than others. Also, invest in an in-ground trampoline that can accommodate the approximate weight of the people who will be using it at one time.
  3.  Be aware that the majority of trampoline injuries happen when there are two or more people using it at one time. It may not sound like much fun, but if you limit the jumpers to one at a time, you are going to be safer. If you simply want more than one person on the trampoline at a time, you need to implement certain rules — no high jumping, no back flips, no daredevil moves. If you have young children — under six years of age — on the trampoline with older (likely heavier) teens or adults, be especially careful as this is when the most injuries occur — when smaller children are on with older, larger teens or adults. 
  4. Don’t place the trampoline near low hanging tree branches or an overhang or eaves on the house. Some people can jump as high as nine feet in the air, so look at the location with a careful eye before you decide where to have it installed. 
  5. Perform maintenance on the in-ground trampoline regularly to assure the jumping area is intact, that the springs are in working order and that the ground is still stable around and beneath the trampoline.

Should you get a trampoline? 5 tips to help you decide, because chances are your children have been asking for one for a while now and you’ve been wondering many things about in-ground trampolines. Here are some tips to help you decide whether an in-ground trampoline is right for your family.

  • Will it really get used? You know you’ve purchased toys or other outdoor items that just sit there, in the driveway or in the garage gathering dust. If you get an in-ground trampoline, though you can almsot rest assured that your childrne and their friends and even you will use it regularly. Why? Because it’s fun and it’s great exercise!
  • Does the shape matter? There are circular and rectangular trampolines, but how do you know which shape is best? It’s both personal preference and the “power” you’re seeking. Round trampolines are most popular with in-ground trampoline owners. Rectangle trampolines are typically used by more experienced gymnasts and have a higher “jump” than do circular ones.
  •  How much yard space will you have to devote to the trampoline? Again, this is a personal preference. You can invest in a smaller in-ground trampoline so you will still have ample yard space available and you can also landscape around the trampoline so it adds to the aesthetics of your yard space. 
  • Place the in-ground trampoline away from trees and other overhanging items that could lead to injury. Find a site in your yard that is fairly level, and free from overhanging items that could lead to injury. 
  • When you’re shopping for your in-ground trampoline, make certain you are working with a supplier that has experience with the devices and with whom you feel comfortable. You will want to find a supplier that is available for questions and can walk you through installation and set up once you’ve taken delivery of your family’s in-ground trampoline.

How To Clean An In-Ground Trampoline

Because your in-ground trampoline is out of doors you may not even think about having to clean it. If you’re wondering how to clean in in-ground trampoline and when, we offer some tips to help you with the process. Even though the trampoline is outside, it is exposed to the elements — rain, wind, dirt and debris — and that means you will want to set aside time occasionally to clean it.

A monthly or at least every monthly cleaning is in order to keep the surface clean of any small twigs or other outdoor elements. If sticks or twigs, pinecones or other outside detritus get on the mat and snag it, you could be faced with a mat that isn’t as reliable as it was before it got snagged and that could make it unsafe for use.

How To Clean An In-Ground Trampoline

  1. Clean the mat itself — the surface of the in-ground trampline. Remove any debris, being careful not to snag the mat. Make sure there are no toys or toy parts on the trampoline. Remove them and set them aside — these should be toys that are specifically approved for use on an in-ground trampoline — no toys that could cause injury.
  2.  Grab a soft bristle broom and sweep away any surface dirt off the side of the trampoline. Make sure none of the dirt or debris falls into the springs or protective pad covering. 
  3. Visually inspect the mat once it’s clean. Look for rips, holes and snags. If you notice damage, the trampoline may need to be repaired before it is safe for use again. Even a small hole can easily become larger when children jump on it. 
  4. Clean the mat with a bucket of warm, soapy water. Use a mild detergent such as a liquid dish soap. If you’re going to disinfect it, make sure you aren’t using anythning with harsh solvents or bleach. Ask us for the best type of soap to use on the mat because if it’s too harsh you can dmage the fibers of the mat and discolor it. 
  5. Always clean the mat when it’s wet. A trampoline that is exposed to the hot sun will be parched and dry and that could easily lead to damage. Once it’s wet you can scrub it with a soft bristle brush or a wet rag in a gentle manner. Use low water pressure to saturate the mat — do not use a pressure washer. When water drips through the mat, it is wet enough to clean. 
  6. Suds up the mat and clean it.
  7. Rinse until the water runs clear. 
  8. Declare the mat off limits until it’s completely dry. The in-ground trampoline will be slippery and unsafe for use. Clean the mat on a sunny day so it will dry quickly and everyone will be able to use it again. 
  9. After the mat is dry, inspect it again before the children get back on it.

Both in-ground and above ground trampolines need to be used wtih safety in mind. Responsible in-ground trampoline ownership means that the adults in the household need ot set rules and that everyone needs to follow them to assure no one is injured on the in-ground trampoline.

When children, or adults for that matter, land incorrectly or improperly on the trampoline they can break a bone, or worse. Children must be aware that performing “stunts” is off limits for safety’s sake.

Here are some in-ground trampoline safety tips to consider putting in place for your family:

  •  Only one person on the trampoline at a time.
  • No somersaults or backflips 
  • Don’t jump on or use the in-ground trampoline without having knowledgeable supervision aka a “spotter”
  • Walk onto the trampoline — don’t bounce from next to it then into it. Injuries could result. 
  • If you’re under the influence of alcohol, don’t use the in-ground trampoline as you may get careless and get injured.
  • Don’t use the trampoline to jump from one surface to another. 
  • Remove sharp objects when jumping. You may also want to remove your glasses. 
  • If you have physical limitations or circulatory impairment, don’t jump unless you have cleared it with your doctor. 
  • Focus your gaze on the edge of the trampoline to help with balance issues.
  • Don’t bounce too high. To stop a bounce, you will want to bend your knees as soon as your feet touch the trampoline.
  • Know the weight limit of the trampoline

Whether you have a swimming pool or a jungle gym for your children, there needs to be safety measures in place and everyone in the household and visitors understand what they are when they are using the in-ground trampoline.
